Nadya;

Keep a smile on your face and keep your head high. I think your manager made up his mind before you went to work for him. I have seen this too many times. People should be helpful and honest. Your manager is a failure but do not let that hurt you. You have just proven how quickly you can learn something new on your own.

>Hi Tom,
>
>Here is the whole deal. I was working in the company for the 4 years. I've designed about 30 different applications in this period of time. Of course, I didn't design every one of them from scratch, but for most I've re-written the significant part of it. I've proved myself to be a good developer and my manager was a really nice person despite some issues from my part (when I wanted to change something for good reason, but didn't think all consequences, etc.).

>Anyway, the project I was working on, is in the Live cycle now. And we have two developers (me and another nice Russian woman). The remaining stuff is mostly maintenance, which doesn't suit me best. So, they decided to downside my position. They clearly feel sorry and uncomfortable with this decision.
>
>Anyway, there was a WEB position in our company, on which I applied. Several people recommended me for the position (my manager and two Russian women from the company). They pressed the IT Manager, so he convinced Joe (he lives in NH and he done our site, at first as a contractor, then about a 6 months ago he become an employee here) to try me despite the fact, he was leaning against me claiming the luck of experience.
>
>This week is my final week. From my point of view, I've done something. I think, setting a month for the whole project was unrealistic. We spent almost 3 weeks discussing business isues before I started programming. Anyway, I've done shopping cart functionality, and I may have time to finish Search functionality in the last 3 days. It would be a really draft, but it's something.

>My prev. manager advised me to ask Joe, how am I doing so far. His response was:

>NN How do you think I'm doing so far?
>
>Joe I will hold off on this for now.

>That's depressing, coming to think of...

>>The following is my opinion, as I do not know all the facts. I could be entirely incorrect about my feelings on this issue but I have seen a good deal in my working career.
>>
>>I do not know if you are working at the same place or not? Do you have a new manager? From your post I get a bad feeling. If I were a manager I would hire someone with the skills required or train them. You have picked up a lot of knowledge about ASP in a short period of time. For that you should be congratulated! One thing a manager should do is to complement, guide and mentor any employee. Managers are there to insure you have the tools to do the job. Tools may include training, hardware, software, and a proper working environment.
>>
>>If your manager wants the company, himself and you to be a success, he would not act as he is. When a manager wants to get rid of someone they will give him or her something impossible to accomplish and “let them figure it out”. That way they have justification that you cannot do the job.
>>
>>By the way I have been a manager but I prefer to be a developer. There are more Indians than there are Chiefs! :)
>>
>>You can work for the worst company in the world and have a great manager. In this case you will be shielded from the negative things from your company. You can work for the best company in the world and have a terrible manager. Should this be the case you may as well be in Hell.
>>
>>Some people should not manage others as they cannot manage themselves. Trained managers in this country are rare and this is one of the biggest problems our business world has. Unskilled managers do not know how to relate to people or business.
