Well, it's not exactly a paper trail, but a trail nonetheless, and, not to sound like Martha Stewart, but it's proven to be a good thing.
If you work alone it's very easy to maintain as I have very handy a to do list whenever I sit at the computer (which is most of the time anyway).
We're trying it at our store (stationery and fine gifts store), where we're coordinating the work of 3 people and even though it's a bit painful to maintain because it's just a word document for every day, we've seen great improvements in how work has been getting done during the week and a half that we've tried it there.
Once we get the details worked out, I'll probably end up writing a quick'n dirty app for that.
