I know some "programmers" that were down-sized a while back. They knew what was important to their "old" employer. They developed a program that would schedule and certify safety training. They got paid to develop it as contractors by their ex-boss, retained copyright and marketed to other similar businesses.

Me - I'm thinking - how boring - safety training software - but these guys were exited about it and that excitement spilled into their market, and they are doing quite well. One iny-tiny niche in a great big nest of em:-).
