Some additioinal information on my issue of losing session state:

Yesterday, I copied the project to the server that it will ultimately run on and tested in that environment. It all worked well. This was the same code and the same web.config file. So . . . I guess the code is OK and the setup of the project is OK. That seems to leave my setup of the project on IIS. I opened the properties box in IIS and compared all the settings to those of earlier projects that worked as advertised and still have not gotten to the bottom of this.
