I never thought of it that way, but you may be onto something here.

The relatively insignificant (as you put it) participation of other countries in the war had no other purpose, imo, than to make this appear as the work of many nations together.

I'm aware that the relatives of ANYONE who died isn't happy at all no matter how much heroism bs is fed to them. The relatives of those that DIDN'T have to go to war, I'm sure are quite happy that their country's participation was, relatively speaking, so much less significant. I would be.
