I believe that behavior is documented as new to VFP 8. I'm at home; I haven't reinstalled 8 since a Windows registry crash 10 days ago, so I'm not entirely sure.
OTOH, yes, object references are now auto-transformed to the string "(Object)" rather than erroring where applicable. Just one more cool little thing, eh?
(I was responsible for testing the new behavior).
