Is there any way to easily interpret a 'blank date' value from a SQL Server table into an ADO.NET table?

It seems that blank dates come back as 1/1/1900. Other than writing code that checks for that, is there a better way to handle this? [In other words, in VFP I could easily do a test for empty dates with the EMPTY() function]
