Ooops I guess that was the wrong device. I know that there are some that can do that becuase we used something like that...the big problem I had though was that these little gizmo's that they were using cost like $225 each or something crazy like that. As far as pluging the phone line into the modem jack on the pc...yes you can do that too...BUT if your dealing with a PBX phone system odds are it's not going to work. Anyway there are some activex's on www.activex.com that you can get and play with (I'd search for 'telephone' and 'caller id') that will do the recording stuff for you. If you want I can call the company I wrote the software for and get the information about the phone device gizmo (like correct name, model number, where to get them, etc.)
I'd also get my hands on the windows media encoder SDK because most likely you'll be using it. (It's free off the Microsoft website)
