Tom,

The was more SV news in this weekends LA Times. The magazine was focused on the Valley making a comeback.

I read a couple of the articles. The really, really sad thing to me was, every story that discussed someone who had been downsized in the Valley and has been looking for work for a substantial time (8 months - 2 years), had a sentence mentioning a failed marriage / relationship during the unemployed timeframe.

>>>I don't like the line, " the market dictates it".
>>
>>That's a great example of what seems to be a new trend: managers applying macro-economic (or macro-political, or macro-social) theories to particular business decisions, in some vague attempt to justify the decisions.
>>
>>Here's another good example: at one of my clients' christmas parties last year, I ended up stuck in a corner talking to a manager about the problems he was having with a few of his "team members." When I asked him what he planned to do, he answered: "the way I look at it, over time, the weaker employees will go by the wayside, and the better ones will hang on. You just need to be patient about these things."

>>Darwinism as management theory!! And, he meant every word.

>Sick! Seems like another management theory was at work and that is, “management by patience”. If you do not do anything what can go wrong? Just wait it out and everything solves itself.

>We had to support a 6 million dollar contract with the DOD. I was an engineer and went to my manager to request a piece of prime electronics equipment (frequency standard) required by the contract. My manager said, “It is not a problem. If it were a problem you would solve it”! I stated, “You are the manager and have the authority to make the purchase. I cannot”. He then repeated, “It is not a problem. If it were a problem you would solve it”!

>Our management staff had been to a weekend seminar at Carmel, California. The theme from the industrial physiologist was “Everything is Alright”! It was a management concept that stated, “There are no problems. If there were you would solve it”!
>
>I went to my VP and got the money, which did not make my manager happy as it went against his budget. He never forgave me. After a few more “lack of actions” from my manager he was transferred. My world was a better place. :)
