Everything depends on the situation.
Some of contractees require:
- fixed price for the project (module)
- fixed price per time (hour, week, month) spent in development.
More suitable is per time spend, but usually most of troubles comes from inexperienced IT manager, who look to fall down cost of development.
If colleague can evaluate your work properly go in this direction, otherwise you should bargain in the beginning of every project – sometimes this is very time consuming.
