I hereby want to share some of my favorite tricks for using MS-Word:

  • The "quick save" feature sometimes creates very large files. I suggest to normally turn it off. (Word and PowerPoint.)
  • Word remembers the position of the cursor when you save. Press Shift-F5 to go back to the place where you had your cursor, when you last saved. (Sometimes this doesn't work, especially when you use master document / subdocuments.) (Unfortunately, recent versions of Word won't save if you click on "Save", when there are no pending changes.)
  • Some of the new features in newer versions of Word can make it work very slowly. I suggest to turn of grammar checking (I don't know how it is English, but in Spanish it seems that Word will continue checking in an endless loop), and, in automatic correction while you type, turn off the option to automatically use suggestions from the spell-checker.
