Maybe this can help:

Create Cursor <yourcursor> (<your field defenitions>)
Select <yourcursor>
Append From 'yourexcelfile.xls' Type Xls

There are also the types "Xl5" and "Xl8" which you can give an option sheet clause:

Append From 'yourexcelfile.xls' Type Xl8 Sheet <yoursheet>
