>Yep. 1726 to be more specific, and corrected in 1735. The unforgettable Gulliver....and it is almost moving, the last quote in particular.

Wow - so that makes it closer to 300 years! And yet, still so fitting...

Note that I copied only some extracts. You may want to read again the full text, at least of the part where Gulliver explains the causes of war (about a page). It should be easy to find in the Internet.

I got it from http://www.jaffebros.com/lee/gulliver/bk4/chap4-5.html, but you may want to search for a version with more annotations: for instance, some of the references to religious differences may be a little confusing.

For instance, "Whether it be better to kiss a post or throw it into the fire" refers to adoration (or not) of figures of saints, "whether Whistling be a Vice or a Virtue" refers to the use (or not) of music in the church, etc.
Difference in opinions hath cost many millions of lives: for instance, whether flesh be bread, or bread be flesh; whether whistling be a vice or a virtue; whether it be better to kiss a post, or throw it into the fire... (from Gulliver's Travels)
