I don't think he meant "proper case" in terms of captializing each "word" in the path. I think he meant original upper/lower case (e.g. if the original directory was "C:\ThisIsMyDirectory", the lookup would not return "C:\THISISMYDIRECTORY", "c:\thisismydirectory" nor "C:\Thisismydirectory").
