Fernando;

Here are just two things I remember reading about Patton.

1. At the end of the war in Europe, there was a victory party at which all high-ranking Allied officers in the area attended. Patton came in and saw a Soviet General and said, “I refuse to sit down with any commie bastard”! He then left the party.

2. Right after Germany surrendered, Patton stated, “We should give all Germans rifles and fight the commie bastards all the way to Moscow”!

I met two men while I was in the Air Force, who were drivers for Patton. They had many stories.

Two of my favorite American Generals were outstanding military men but very human in all other ways. They were criticized for anything they did. Patton and MacArthur. Both were brilliant men and both were very concerned about each man who fought for them. They were the only Generals I know of that took great pains to minimize losses and cared for the men they commanded. They knew how to win battles but they were both outspoken and despised by especially politicians.

Patton knew how to fight and win but he had the biggest logistics problem of any field unit. He would press on and over run his supply lines and expect his supplies to catch up to him. That is very much how the United States Marines fight – travel light, hit hard and fast.
