The main disadvantage is that it requires more hardware - but it must be a
very old machine if it can't run at least VFP 3.
To learn the new features of VFP requires to learn a lot, but it is worthwhile. In the meantime, VFP is quite compatible with FoxPro.
To the advantages Jess mentioned, I want to add:
Buffering.
Support for views (updatable queries).
Support for JPG and GIF images (take up less space than BMP).
New field types, that use up less space: DateTime, 8 bytes; Integer, 4 bytes; Currency, 8 bytes; Double, 8 bytes; also, memo only uses 4 bytes instead of 10 in the DBF).
And all sorts of new commands, like StrToFile(), FileToStr() and alines(), to quickly access any file on disk; MessageBox(), to quickly show a message in a window; and many more.
Difference in opinions hath cost many millions of lives: for instance, whether flesh be bread, or bread be flesh; whether whistling be a vice or a virtue; whether it be better to kiss a post, or throw it into the fire... (from Gulliver's Travels)
