another setting is SET EXCLUSIVE. VFP is much faster in many regards when it has open a table exclusively, because it doesn't have to invalidate the cache all the time. I think, SET EXCLUSIVE ON is the default setting for the development environment which could make application appear faster in the IDE than in the EXE.
