I have a friend who is anti-war and has been on a couple of protests - one, the huge one in London and one last week in Cardiff (capital of Wales) where we both live. She's a peaceful person and basically wanted to just carry her sign and express her views. At the end of the march, as she was about to head home, she was approached by a bunch of pro-war locals telling her she should be ashamed at being so disloyal to our troops. She firstly attempted to tell them why she was marching, but soon left as they appeared to be "getting feisty" (her understatement).
It annoys me that while we, as a society, like to say we're in favour of freedom of expression, this so often only seems to hold sway as long as we don't disagree with each other. Hey, part of the reason that we're in Iraq there is to promote such values!
Humans, bah. I despair!
>Is it ironic to anyone else that some peace protests are turning violent?
