I'm not noticing any kind of speed issue when I save. Do you belive I'll notice degredation once a few hundered people are connecting and disconnecting? I don't think I'll put it to the test, but I am curious.

I would definitely NOT continually connect and disconnect before and after an update. That is too much of a performance hit for me. I would connect if needed, but not disconnect until the user quits the app.
