It's a bit of a throwback to dbase syntax where it was sometimes considered useful to differentiate between a memory variable and a field name.

Now that we don't have to worry about the 10-character variable name (that was present in early versions of Foxpro also), most people don't use the m. prefix.

Many use variations on MS naming conventions

Eg, instead of

m.Thing = 10

liThing = 10
