I agree that it depends. I just don't like the statement (something like) I connect at the beginning of the app and keep the connection alive thru the live of the app. If someone is doing heavy data input than I would recommend starting the connect when the user enters the "heavy data entry" section.

IMHO, I would never keep a connect open from the start becuase the user could be doing non-SQL processing and most companies can save money by limiting the connections.
