I don't really know if it was because of installing VS.Net, but the next time I did an install for vfp7 after I installed vs.net, I found that some of the defaults in the Installshield for VFP7 had been deselected. I had to reselect the VFP7 runtimes and the C runtimes.

Like I said, I don't know if there is a connection - it could be coincidence, or something else I installed, but the situation did happen.
