That's not always going to work either. The users can print and eject one receipt and separate the counting from the position.

I know, I've got the same situation in code I'm maintaining. The solution for me was to keep a separate running total of lines printed and make sure that it stayed exactly on the half-page.

Another possibility that I didn't explore fully was to define the page length as a half-page so that an eject sets it to the top of the next receipt.
