I too still have old college accounting texts. As for programming degrees, I think it depends on what discipline you're looking at. For example, the Univeristy of Utah does not offer any business computer degrees (IMO, not very smart) and has a highly rated CS curriculum. Yes, it is high on science and engineering emphasis. On the other hand, Utah State University (where I attened) offers both a science/engineering emphasis and a business emphasis. Accounting and other business classes are required for the accounting emphasis.

I still have my old college accounting books and I needed them on many occasions when I've written accounting packages. I was surprised to learn recently that accounting is no longer required for Programming degrees! It seems that if it can be done using an excel macro, they don't need to learn it or the principles anymore. Surprising!
