>Let me go back to “ancient history”. When I was an electronics engineer we had a recession here in Silicon Valley, which began around 1990. I would send out resumes and actually get replies thanking me for my resume and inquiry about employment, with a note, “We will keep your resume on file for future reference”.

>By the time 1992 got here things were worst! On one weekend I sent out 200 resumes and did not receive one reply or response from any of the companies. These were not resumes sent blindly but from legitimate sources (ie. State of California Employment Development Department[EDD], friends, and newspapers for example). I decided to go into programming – from the frying pan to the fire!

>We had sessions with EDD about how companies treat resumes. SUN Microsystems HR Director talked to us. Many companies were using scanning software. You had to use the “correct font type and size” to be acceptable to the automatic reader. Also, you had to use specific buzzwords. If you had a friend inside of a company who could tell you what to use you had a chance to get an interview. At that time SUN was receiving an average of 4000 resumes for each job posted. The HR Director said, “After we have a stack of ‘accepted resumes’, we take less than 30 seconds to read them”.

>Head hunters are a sick lot! You have to use everything at your disposal to keep trying to get a job.

>There is a term often used in Sociology, “The Have’s and The Have Nots”! I began using a term, “The used to haves”! for the 60,000 unemployed electronics engineers we had during the first half of the 1990’s. Now we have lost 146,000 jobs in Silicon Valley during the last two years.

>P.S. My mother (who is 88) calls me Tommy, as does my wife. I can tell when my wife is mad at me (who me?) because she calls me Tom! :) Sean Connery’s real name is Thomas. All his friends call him Tommy.
