What is the size if you copy the structure to another table and then step through the original table and add the records (one by one, not appending) to the new table? I've had more success with it:
USE mytable in 0 EXCLU
SELE mytable
COPY STRUCTURE TO newtable
USE newtable in 0
SELE mytable
SCAN
SCATTER MEMVAR MEMO
SELE newtable
APPEND BLANK
GATHER MEMVAR MEMO
SELE mytable
ENDSCAN
