In fairness, the Brits have a particular advantage, namely the "Northern Ireland" experience that taught the Army how to get along with secular groups whose resentment often lurked just under the surface and for whom open support or gratitude was out of the question. One can only imagine the feelings of American youngsters from Indiana and New York when they suddenly find themselves in an environment that is so foreign it might as well be an alien planet.

"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
