I dont know about if you arent logged in. It might, I think a service is run for the updates.
I know you dont need the browser open.
Just add the item to favorites, then choose Make Available Offline.
Then setup a nice schedule for it. You can even make it login to the website with credentials and lot of other options.
It is a great FREE way of handling the job.
