You need a Barcode scanner. For development purposes, I have a wedge wand like the one at
http://www.pcmall.com/pcmall/shop/detail.asp?dpno=862875

You also need a barcode font in order to print the barcodes on the student cards. There is a free download of a 3of9 font and txt file instructions at http://lasse.hjorth.net/src/barcode/

Once you have the scanner hooked up to your keyboard cable and the font is installed on your computer you'll want to test them to make sure everything works. You can use a Word Processor, such as MS Word to print a barcode on paper and then scan the code right back into Word to verify it is working okay.

Next, design a card size report to print student information and the barcode, and a form to collect the scans.

It's really that easy.

If you have problems, just ask :)
