>Looking for some input. My company has decided to upgrade from v6 to v7. I found a few nice things in v8 that would come in very handy like the auto increment data type and the improved grid control, etc... I am researching whether or not it would be a good idea to go straight from v6 to v8 and skip 7 altogether. Aside from the time it would take to convert every app we have from 6 to 7 then to 8, I am looking for some pros to the new version - or do you think it's better to wait...

Dottie;

There was a time that companies would not use the latest greatest version of a software tool or operating system until it had been in use for a while. No one wants to deliver a product whether new or upgraded that was created with new software that may have a “show stopper” that is found somewhere down the road. Consequently many people would wait until a Service Pack had been released. VFP 6.0 became more stable when SP 3 was released as an example.

What tool to use is a business decision. Does VFP 6, 7 or 8 meet the needs of your clients (operating system requirements, networks, etc.). Take all things into consideration and then make a decision. What about “feature set”? Which one meets your needs today and for the future? Support? Looks like VFP 8.0 will be supported until the year 2010. From what I hear VFP 8.0 is the most stable version of VFP out of the box.

Fighting "city hall" is never fun! :)
