Tracy;

France has contributed a great deal to civilization so let us concentrate upon the positive things for a moment. As an example France invented the Fork, which is a most useful eating utensil! Some people prefer the fingers but by using a fork, you do not have to wash your hands after eating chicken, as an example.

France also invented perfume, which at the time of its development changed how people smelt about each other. In those days people did not bathe so perfume gave a “different impression” about people whom you dealt with.

Another French invention comes from French cooking and is called “sauce” and began around 1800. It seems that French restaurants were loosing money because of spoiled meat. Meat that was spoiled had a terrible odor and detecting it would save you from becoming ill. French chefs are said to have invented “sauces” to disguise the flavor and odor of spoiled meat, which was excellent for the restaurant businesses but still made the patrons ill.

Even today where else could you go and be insulted, poisoned and expected to give at least a 15% gratuity? Why a restaurant of course!

We have learned a lot from the French and continue to do so.

Tom
