After doing a bit of work on this now, the solutions using the proprietary products looked like sledgehammers for the nut of the problem and not really that appropriate for the exact nature, though I appreciate that this was probably due to me not being specific enough.

For the person who asked what the hex map was for: Its going to be a map of territory controlled/known about for each player of a game I'm developing (or playing with developing anyway!). If I do write it, I will of course offer UT members free betas ;-)

So, the solution I've gone for is to get a webby expert to draw up a grid from a text file (ie. I generate the parameters and call his routine, then store the resultant web-accessible file).

...and I'm hoping that the only charge is that I'm now hosting his site free of charge ;-)
