I'm not sure what to tell you. I created a report in 7 with _PAGETOTAL and then ran it in 8.0 and it was fine. I also built an EXE in 8.0 and ran it just fine.

Is it possible that the report really isn't being run in version 8.0? Try adding a field object to the report with an expression of VERSION() so you can see what version the report is really be run in. You'll probably have to take the _PAGETOTAL off the report first so you don't bomb out with an error.
