How many documentary war films have been shown of cities being taken by first one side and then the other in a leapfrog manner, with the citizens always having the appropriate flag to wave and a smile on his/her mug? I would smile too with the hope the bastards would leave me alone.

It is easier to smile than to frown – fewer muscles are involved. Perhaps the “liberated people” are so tired they do not have the strength to do otherwise.
