Alex -- my philosophy is always very close to what Glen just wrote... give advice, but make sure they realize that the ultimate decision is theirs.... It's important to cover your butt on these matters, and you can do so without coming across as antagonistic.

My last piece of advice is that, if possible, make the clarification in writing. For instance, you mention that you will clear this up in the next meeting. Frankly, I would send an email to the client prior to that that says "just to clarify...." etc. It will be in your interest to have something in your hand in writing, even just an email, when the new owner of the company contacts your lawyer in 2006 (or some other scenario).
