Craig, I'm not a legal expert but I dont think your point is quite right because GM
do own the IP in respect of many parts of the car. GM do not sell you the IP contained in the car, its systems, its design, etc, or the other copyright-able parts of the car. In a "sense" they are selling you the right to use that car in any way you choose but you may not infringe any IP or copyrights contained in it.
