Hey Trace,

Texans are supposed to pay a Use tax for all items where they did not pay sales tax (shipped from out of state, for example). Most folks don't know about it (or would claim ignorance if they did *grin*).

Here's how you report it (from comptroller's website--there is a link for the field office):

If you do not hold a Texas sales and use tax permit, and you purchased items on which the seller did not collect Texas sales our use tax, then you may report the tax as a one-time purchase by contacting the nearest enforcement field office.

I think it's funny :)

>North Carolina has a use tax on purchases made outside the State for use in North Carolina. Residents are responsible for paying the use tax on purchases for which no North Carolina sales or use tax has been charged. The use tax applies to transactions that would be subject to sales tax if the purchase were made in North Carolina. The use tax rate is the same as the sales tax rate that would apply to the purchase if it were made in North Carolina.
