Thanks for the information on the WINE Group and their work. Of parallel interest is the work of the Mono Project who are working on an open source implementation of the .NET Framework for Linux (you're probably familiar with their work, but others may not). This latter effort looks more promising for cross platform application distribution, but will only work with native .NET applications as they are not attempting COM/COM+ interoperability.

That your clients experienced on some desktops is evidence that the problem wasn't just Win98, but possibly a problem with Win98 and other hardware and/or software. I remember a problem I encountered running a scheduled task on an NT server that was also running Tivoli. In that case there was a simple workaround. I'm sorry your situation turned out badly.
