I'd use a more mainstream approach and set the local view modes in the 'click' events of the Navigation buttons, 'Add' would add a record to the grid and highlight it (thru calling the refresh method) while in 'Edit' mode, you highlight what the user clicked on which would seem less confusing to the user and eliminate that jump from a highlighted row to another.
