I took your suggestion regarding the use of parameterized views. They're working like charms! No disappearing grids, fast response, less code, more hidden from users- good deal.
ALthought I've used them before, I don't know if I would have thought of views as a solution in this case; I probably would have endured more hair-pulling before surrenduring. Thanks again for the push in the right direction.
