Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). It is supported by most web servers (IIS, Apache) and most Browsers (IE, Netscape, Mozilla, etc.)

You need to get a certificate, from a Certification Authority (like Verisign), for the web server. The client browser works automagically.
