Does the current failure provide ANY clues?... was it at start of your automated processing or during it, or was it at start or during the data entry process?

In any case, you may want to think hard about going back to VFP7. IF there really is LOST DATA, then VFP7 **probably** simply hides the fact from you and proceeds merrily along. I don't know for sure, but that's what I would AssUme.
