i read the messages from the other members. I personaly don't like the Canditade indexes. let me explain: i might very well have done something wrong when i tested for a best solution for my current app, but what i came up with is that if you enter a record into a table with a canditade index, then delete it, and then try to enter the same value in the field with the candidate index - it won't let you untill you pack the table.
as i sad, i might have done something wrong back then (i tryed 'set deleted on/off'). but that i would defently test before you use this approach.
