Got an email from MS about a day after I posted the "keys" thing here and so am very happily running II6 now.

Less fortunately my main dev machine (not the IIS server) has recently suffered catastrophic failure so sorry for not responding for so long - still, I'm going to buy a new shiny laptop instead so it can't be all bad... ;-)
