Oh, the theory is definitely back end dependent. It's also dataset/usage dependent.

Even with our pal Rushmore, physically sorting data in a frequently-used sequence simply means there's less disk to traverse to assemble a result set. With another back end, all bets are off. Fine tuning SQL Server and Oracle for every last nit of performance is a black art I leave for others. ;-)
