What's the difference between an ER Source Model and a Data Model Diagram? Should I use one over the other when creating a SQL Server model?

I'm involved in my first SQL Server development team project and am used to using xCase as my database design tool. It looks like I'm going to be using Visio for Enterprise Architects. My clients have only needed VFP databases to date.
