Go to Google and search for "History of DOS". You'll get lots of hits.
Eventually, Digital Research was bought by Novell. DR DOS still exists, but has been sold by Novell to another company. Interestingly, that company is owned by Ray Noorda, who was the CEO at Novell when they bought DR. A couple of years ago, that company and Microsoft settled a court case filed by Noorda claiming that MS tried to squash the use of DR-DOS in embedded systems.
