The issue is whether the remote database supports ODBC access (MySQL does). The operating system is irrelevant. MySQL could be running on Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, Windows 2000, whatever - it doesn't matter. The MySQL ODBC driver installed on your Windows client computer will let you connect to it. The steps involved are the same as connecting to any other database that supports ODBC on any other platform.

No, I don't have it in operation but tens of thousands of others do. I've worked against PostgreSQL, another open-source database with ODBC support and it works just fine.
