Gerard,
.DAT is used as a general extension for data files. It doesn't say anything further about who created it and what the format might be. ie: In old DOS days between Foxplus and Foxpro I decided to create my own dbase system < bg > and was naming data files using .dat extension. I was also using an index file with an extension of .ndx. The structure of .dat and .ndx was only available through code that created and responsible for getdata/setdata. It was so that if I lose creator code I was left out to only trial and error to find out the structure (and would fail most likely).
