Network Database Applications with Linux on Embedded Hardware

- Paul Nowak's presentation is going to be a quick how-to on installing Linux on an embedded computer followed by a demo of some applications that can be run on the computer. Install topics will include kernel compiling, file system creation, bootloader install, and some reference pointers. The demo will include making an Ethernet connection to the computer and interacting with some popular open source software including a database servers (MySQL), the bash command line, and a web server.

The embedded computer being used is a compact, low-power, low-cost, communication computer based on a 133 Mhz 486 class (AMD Elan SC 520) processor. Features include two 10/100 Mbit ethernet ports, up to 64 Mbyte SDRAM main memory, and use of a CompactFlash module for program and data storage. Each board can be expanded using a MiniPCI type III board and up to two PC-Card/Cardbus adapters. For severe duty, pluggable modules can be replaced with board-mounted components.

DAFUG meets on the third Thursday of the month (except for July). The Royal Oak Public Library is located one mile west of I-75, one mile east of Woodward Avenue, and one mile north of I-696. Free parking is available in the Farmers Market lot just east of us across Troy Street. Metered parking is available in the city lot just to the west of us.

Admission to DAFUG meetings will be granted free to anyone for 1 (one) meeting. After that you must either join the group (at the low cost of $30 a year, $15 for a half year) or you will be asked to pay $5 per meeting you attend. The $5 will grant you admission but no other rights or privileges of membership.
